World Migratory Bird Day Celebration with the Travis Audubon Society
May 9 2026 Saturday – 9am – 1pm at the Center for Environmental Research
2210 South FM 973
Our annual celebration of birds. This year's theme is Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter, which highlights the role of public participation in collecting data on migratory bird populations, their habitats, and factors that impact their populations. https://www.migratorybirdday.org/
Learn about local organizations where you can participate in citizen science! We will be joined by our partners the Travis Audubon Society, Austin Water PIO and Wildland Conservation, Austin Watershed Protection, Austin Wildlife Rescue, Birdability, Central Texas Mycological Society, Hill Country Alliance, Great Springs Project, Native Plant Society of Texas, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Bexar Audubon, Austin Butterfly Forum, and more!
Free, guided birding – Learn to identify birds! Bring binoculars and join us at birding stations around the CER and the ponds.
At 10 AM, Dr. Kevin Anderson, Coordinator for Austin Water Center for Environmental Research, will offer a presentation titled "Birds, Birders, and A Place Called Hornsby Bend" in the CER auditorium for anyone who is interested in learning more about the history of birds and birding at Hornsby Bend. Free popcorn!!
And, of course, the CER is all about public participation in collecting data on migratory bird populations, and so all morning volunteers will be conducting the May Bird Survey of Hornsby Bend and at NOON they will report their results. The goal is 120 species! And all of that data from our bird surveys going back to 1999 is online in our monitoring database
More information about our Celebration and register if you are coming to give us a count for who is coming on the Travis Audubon Society website
